Cache County nearly lost millions of dollars of grant funding because a team of state auditors discovered fraud, misappropriation, violations of state statutes, weak internal controls and lack of documentation in the ways that the county conducts its finances.

That’s unacceptable. Cache Valley taxpayers deserve to know that their funds are kept safe, accurately reported, and that their elected officials are honoring their stewardships.

Additionally, forensic audits have identified at least one instance where budget allocations authorized in writing by the Cache County Council were not followed, allowing over $350,000 of taxpayer money to be illegally redirected. The county budget is an expression of the will of the people through their elected officials. It must be followed, and the misappropriation found in recent audits must not be allowed to occur again.
